Concerned Citizens of Assonet with help from CCF has formed an alliance with the residents of Assonet, Massachusetts. The purpose of this alliance is to educate the Assonet and Freetown residents of issues that impact us. Issues such as environmental concerns, health risks and other important topics that directly impact our lives.

Concerned Citizens of Freetown

The Concerned Citizens of Freetown is open to any resident of Freetown. We are dedicated to a better quality of life for all who live in our town, and will share knowledge with anyone concerned about the environment and the adverse effects of development.

CCF continues to recruit new members and gather community support from other grassroots organizations from Boston, New Bedford, and local communities in southeastern Massachusetts. Concerned Citizens of Freetown's Environmental Justice Awareness Program educates citizens of Freetown about the functions of both state and federal environmental protection agencies, environmental regulations and the law, environmental pollution, toxic waste, health hazards and safety issues.

CCF members attend town meetings frequently to address environmental issues and concerns. They are also involved with decision strategies and plans to halt industrial development in the residential community. Members, supporters and volunteers participate in activities and events planned by the organization.

 


Issue #1 - MBTE found in private well water in Assonet.

When is the last time you had your well water tested? Was it a basic test or an extensive test that would catch volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as MBTE? Why would MTBE be in my drinking water? If you live on or near Narrows Road in Assonet, you need to know that MTBE has been found in a private well. It may also be in your well or the soil where your garden is.


What is MTBE?


MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether)
is a synthetic chemical that is added to gasoline to improve air quality as part of the Clean Air Act (CAA). MTBE is usually added to Reformulate Gasoline (RFG), oxygenated fuel and premium grades of unleaded gasoline.
